Hydroelectric Projects in Kerala

Hydroelectric projects are a primary source of electricity in Kerala. Electricity is generated in these projects by harnessing the power of falling water. Water stored in dams is channeled to power stations through tunnels and steel penstocks. These power stations house massive generators, where electricity is produced by the rotation of turbines. The turbines are designed to spin when struck by the force of water falling from a height. The Pallivasal hydroelectric project, established by the Kannan Devan Company at Pallivasal in Munnar in 1906, holds the distinction of being both Kerala's first power project and its first private power project. Developed at a cost of ₹8.5 lakh, the Pallivasal project had a capacity of 200 kilowatts. At one time, this project supplied electricity to the factories, schools, and homes in Munnar. Later, in 1940, the first government-owned power station in Kerala was established at the same location in Pallivasal.
