Wind Farms in Kerala

A wind generator is a device designed to produce electricity from wind. It consists of a wind turbine and an attached generator; the generator operates as the turbine's blades rotate. Since wind strength is variable, the amount of electricity generated fluctuates—rising and falling—rather than remaining constant. There are various types of wind generators. They can be used to charge batteries and power household appliances such as lights, refrigerators, and televisions. Many countries today operate "wind farms"—installations where multiple wind generators work together to produce enough electricity to meet a city's needs. The turbines used for this purpose are generally massive. Consistent wind flow is essential for the efficient operation of wind generators; therefore, they are typically installed in areas with strong, steady winds, often on barren land. 

The Kanjikode Wind farm is the first Wind Farm in Kerala and is located at Kanjikode in the Pudussery Panchayat, Palakkad District. The Kerala State Electricity Board Limited established this first nonconventional (wind) energy project at Kajnjikode with the assistance of Ministry of Non conventional energy sources in 1995. The Foundation stone was laid on 1994 and Inauguratied on 7 November 1995. The Wind farm at Kanjikode has an installed capacity of 2.025MW (9 x2.25kW). It is operated and controlled by the Kerala State Electricity Board Limited.
