Sufi movement in India
The word Sufi literally means 'those who wear woolen clothes'. Sufism is a reform movement that began with inspiration from the Holy Quran and the life of the Prophet Muhammad. Buddhism, Jainism and Hinduism also influenced Sufism. Sufism, which began in West Asia, took root and gained popularity in India during the Sultanate period. Sufis were agnostics.
