Handicrafts are the art of making things by hand. These are mostly cottage industries. Handicrafts refer to a specific skill or art in making things such as carpets and pottery. It can also mean creating beautiful objects for decoration. These include jewelry, stained glass windows, and woodworking. Some crafts have reached such a high level that they can be called an art. The earliest crafts may have been made by people using sharp stones and wood. People in prehistoric times had to rely on hand tools to make the tools they needed, because they did not have machines. For thousands of years, handicrafts were the only way to make various items. From small pottery vessels to carpets worth thousands of rupees are made today as handicrafts. The use of machines was very limited. These were mostly handmade, unique products.

Classification of Indian handicrafts

Cloth Handicrafts

Indian handicrafts are highly labour intensive, cottage industry and decentralized. A large section of the rural and urban population is associated with the textile manufacturing sector. Various units are working to preserve the cultural heritage of the artisans of this sector.

Embroidery Crafts

Embroidery is the name given to the artwork on fabrics. Embroidery ranges from simple designs to highly intricate artwork.

Glass Crafts

Working with glass. Examples are pottery making, glassblowing, stained glass design, and glass mosaic art.

Ivory carvings

Ivory is a hard material made from the tusks and teeth of certain animals. Polished ivory is carved into decorative objects and works of art.

Gold crafts

The main metal used to make jewelry is gold. The most common types are bracelets, earrings, necklaces, rings, and many other types of jewelry are made of gold. Jewelry was primarily used for personal adornment. But it has also been worn for religious purposes or as a symbol of wealth or status.
