Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL)
The Kochi Metro system is implemented, run, and maintained by Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) that is a 50:50 joint venture between the governments of Kerala and India. One of India's fastest completed metro projects, the 28-km Phase I (Blue Line), which runs from Aluva to Thrippunithura Terminal with 25 stops, is already operational. KMRL is especially noteworthy for using solar power to provide a large percentage of its energy needs and for its integrated approach, which connects rail, road, and water transportation infrastructure. The Phase II (Pink Line) expansion from JLN Stadium to Infopark/Kakkanad is presently under construction, whereas the Blue Line is fully operating. Although monsoons and utility moving might occasionally cause delays in project timetables, the project's ultimate goal for full commissioning is December 2027.
Ridership: In recent years, Kochi Metro's average daily passenger numbers have regularly surpassed one lakh, indicating a steady and significant growth in ridership. The system has achieved an operational surplus for three consecutive fiscal years thanks in large part to this increasing patronage, underscoring its growing success as a favored urban transport option.
