Directorate of Coir Development, Kerala

The Kerala government's Directorate of Coir Development is in charge of promoting, regulating, overseeing, and updating the state's coir sector. It oversees the growth of the coir industry, carries out modernization and welfare initiatives for coir workers, and opens up new markets both domestically and abroad. The Directorate of Coir Development facilitates Kerala's coir industry's growth and sustainability. It serves as the implementation agency for all Kerala government policy decisions related to the coir industry. It is the designated organization for carrying out the coir industry's schemes.

The coir industry is one of the state's most important traditional industries. It employs almost four lakh people, making it the largest employer in rural Kerala. Women make up 80% of the employers. However, the industry has the ability to create many more jobs with the right guidance and a development mechanism. Additionally, the business generates about Rs. 800 crores in foreign exchange annually. The Directorate of Coir Development is responsible for carrying out all Kerala government policy decisions pertaining to the coir sector. The Directorate is in charge of the ten coir project offices located around the state in Chirayinkeezhu, Kollam, Kayamkulam, Alappuzha, Vaikom, North Paravur, Thrissur, Ponnani, Kozhikode, and Kannur.

A strategic and creative approach to the sector's growth has been envisioned by the State Government. It seeks to create more long-term jobs in the industry and encourage its progressive development. The Directorate's action plan is based on the idea of serving as a catalyst for the growth and sustainability of Kerala's coir industry.
