Iron and Steel Industry in India

The first Steel Industry Plant in India is Bengal Iron Works company. It was started in 1870 at West Bengal. However, the first large scale steel plant is TISCO. It is established at Jamshedpur in 1907. TISCO was the first modern Iron and Steel plant. It was set up by Jamshedji Tata. It is the biggest private sector plant. IISCO launched steel plant at Burnpur in 1919. TISCO and IISCO belongs to private sector. The first public sector unit in India is Vishveshvaraya Iron and Steel works at Bhadrawati. The other public sector steel plants in india are Rourkela (Odisha), Bhilai (Chhattisgarh), Durgapur (WB), Bokaro (Jharkhand), Burnpur (WB) and Vishakhapattnam (AP). Bhilai Plant was set up in collaboration with Russia in Chhattisgarh. Rourkela Steel Plant in Odisha was setup under the Second Five Year Plan period in association with Germany. Bokaro Steel Plant was set up under the fourth five year plan in association with the Russian Government. It is located in Jharkhand. The first on-shore steel plant in india is Vishakhapatnam. Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) was established in 1974. The public sector steel plants are managed by SAIL. Major iron and steel companies such as Jindal Stainless, Lloyd's Metal, JSW Steel, Bhushan Steel, etc., were established in the 1970s and 1980s.
