Cotton Textile Industry in India

Cotton Textile Industry is the oldest industry of India. India was one of the first countries in the world to grow cotton and make cotton fabrics. Because of this strong foundation, the cotton textile industry became an important part of indian economy and culture. During ancient and medieval period, many kings and rulers in india supported the cotton production because it created employment and increased trade. This early success helped the indian cotton textile industry to become globally recognised long before the modern mills were introduced. The first Cotton Textile mill was started in India during the british rule in 1818 at Fort Gloster, Calcutta. Bombay spinning and weaving Co. was established in 1854 at Bombay by CN.Davar. It is the first modern cotton textile mill in India. Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu are the leading cotton textile producing states in India. Kanpur is famous for textiles and clothing, large modern tanneries, leather works and shoe manufacturing. The modern woollen textile industry is Lal Imli at Kanpur in 1876. The largest producer of woollen textile in India is Punjab. The main wool producing states are Rajasthan, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Haryana. Ludhiana is called as the Manchester of India. It produces 90% of woolens in India.
