Indian Cottage Industries
Cottage industries are the manufacturing of products carried out in homes or workshops attached to homes. Although it may not a big industry, cottage industries make a huge contribution to the economy of not only India but also any country. Cottage industries produce products from small pottery to carpets worth tens of thousands. Often, such workshops do not have to be full-time operations. The use of machinery in cottage industries is also very limited. These are mostly handmade and different products. The biggest advantage of cottage industries is that they are produced with minimal investment and maximum utilization of human labor.
Cottage industries began at a time when the agricultural sector was very important in the country's economy. Cottage industries were small production activities that farmers started for their livelihood during the non-agricultural seasons. Cottage industries are very important in a country like India with a large population. The collapse of cottage industries during the British rule was a major reason for increasing poverty in India. Leaders including Gandhiji worked hard to promote cottage industries. Cottage industries have a prominent place in the economy of India after independence. Such industries create many employment opportunities. In addition, cottage industries also make it possible to effectively utilize the labor potential of women in rural areas. Cottage industries are also known as village industries.
