Attorney General of India (Article 76)
Article 76 provides for the
officer of the Attorney General of India. He give advice to the Government on
legal matter when referred to him by the President. He appear in the Supreme
Court on behalf of the Government of India. He is the highest law officer of
India. He is appointed by the President. He must be qualified to be appointed
as judge of the Supreme Court. However, the Constitution does not mention the
minimum age or retirement age. The Attorney General has the power to appear in
person in any court in India and express his opinion. He can also participate
in the discussions in both Houses of Parliament. He has the power to speak and
take part in the proceedings of the parliament, without the right to vote. The
equivalent position of Attorney General in the states is Advocate General.
