Kerala Zoos and Museums
The main operational zoos in Kerala are the Thiruvananthapuram Zoo and the Thrissur Zoo & Museum, overseen by the Department of Museums and Zoos.
Napier Museum and Zoo
The first zoo in Kerala was in Thiruvananthapuram. This zoo, which is more than a century and a half old, is one of the oldest zoos in the world. It was established in 1853 by Utram Thirunal, the Maharaja of Travancore. The animal enclosures were built by experts from London. The Napier Museum, located near the zoo, is the first museum in Kerala. This museum was started as a place to display art objects from the palace collection. It also had the cooperation of some British people. The museum was renovated in 1879. The museum, built in an attractive Indo-European architecture, was named ' Napier Museum ' as a tribute to Lord Napier . Historical documents and models of Kerala houses were displayed there in the early days. The museum has a wide range of exhibits, including Kathakali figures, bronze statues, stone sculptures , wooden carvings , and ivory sculptures.
Thrissur Zoo & Museum
Opened in 1885 in Chembukkavu, Thrissur. This 13.5-acre site features a collection of mammals, reptiles, and a natural history museum. Also a much larger replacement facility, the Puthur Zoological Park, is being developed nearby.
In the past, places where elephants and baby elephants caught from the wild were trained were called elephant kennels. There were specially trained elephants and training facilities here to tame the newly arrived elephants. Konni (Pathanamthitta) and Kodanad (Ernakulam) are the elephant training centers in Kerala. Elephant sanctuaries work with the aim of protecting elephants, their habitats and routes. The main elephant sanctuaries in Kerala are Wayanad , Nilambur , Anamudi and Periyar. The Elephant Rehabilitation Center in Kerala is located in Kottoor (Kappukadu) in Thiruvananthapuram.
